An Appeal for Prayer and Solidarity with the Victims of the Nepal Floods

28 August 2026

The Catholic Church in India stands in sorrow and solidarity with all those affected by the devastating floods and landslides that have struck the Nepal-China border region, claiming hundreds of lives and leaving entire communities in ruin.

We join the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, in offering our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the bereaved families, the injured, and all those who have lost their homes and livelihoods in this tragedy. As the Holy Father has assured the victims of his spiritual closeness, so too do we, as the Church in India, stand close to our brothers and sisters in this hour of grief. On behalf of the Catholic Church in India, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão the President of the CCBI calls upon all members of the hierarchy, the faithful, religious congregations, institutions, and people of goodwill to respond to this crisis with prayer, compassion, and practical solidarity — in whatever way each is able.

We pray in particular for the souls of the deceased, for the consolation of their families, and for the safety and strength of all emergency personnel engaged in rescue and relief operations.

May God, in His mercy, bring healing to the injured, comfort to the bereaved, and hope to all who face this disaster.
